10 Essential Project Zomboid Tips & Tricks To Stay Alive
Surviving the zombie apocalypses is the main goal of Project Zomboid but will you survive forever alone among the dead, this is how you die!!!
In most of the horror survival games, to survive, you need weapons, supplies, and kill all the zombies you encounter. But Project Zomboid is completely different from most zombie killing games. Project Zomboid is more like Don’t Starve mixed with zombies.
There are so many things you can do in Project Zomboid like crafting, traveling, building a base, item collection, resource management, killing & defending from zombies, etc. Somethings will kill you and some will help you to stay alive.
The important thing that will keep you alive while playing Project Zomboid is patience and critical thinking. Death is the ultimate fate in the game, whether it’s by zombies or by aging. But how and how much you live depends upon your gameplay. You should be calm and alert 24/7, a single hasty decision will cost you your life.
I am playing Project Zomboid since its initial release and have played various mods & builds. So I have learned many things over a couple of years. These are my best tips and tricks that kept me alive and will keep you alive.
It Takes Time
No one can master Project Zomboid before playing it or within a few days of practice. There are too many things to learn and become an expert at crafting, exploring, dealing with the environment, various types of zombies, and resource management. You need to learn many aspects of the game that you will inherit after many failures.
With many patches and updates, several things have changed in the game and also some additional features are added. So you need to be updated if you are playing after a year or two. While playing the game, try to do the same thing in a different way to understand optimal solutions. The only way to master PZ is to play again and again until you are satisfied with your gameplay.
Read and Learn
Patience comes with a lot of reading, watching, reviews, and research. You will find everything on the internet about PZ guides, tips & tricks, PZWiki, walkthroughs, mods, maps, etc. People have shared their own experiences with you, so learn and take what’s best for you.
Maybe my tips & tricks are not 100% satisfying to you, so learn 70% from me and learn the other 30% percent for different sources. If you don’t like reading then you wouldn’t be reading this article. However, you can go through tons of PZ walkthroughs on YouTube.
While playing PZ on any mode don’t just wander and pick anything you like. Know what are the uses of the item, where I can use it, what is the lifespan, and how much important it is. Be choosy with what you grab.
When it’s your first night, you will most probably have fresh food, sheets, alcohol, machinery, etc near you. Always think of the future because sooner or later electricity will cut off, you will be out of fresh food, no drinkable water, and you will get sick or wounded.
So be prepared with a medkit, farming, get garbage bags to collect rainwater, use cloths as bandages, spirit as a disinfectant. Collect construction items like screws, duck tape, nails, glues, hammers, screwdrivers, axes, saws, etc. I will help you to fix weapons and build shelter, defense, or a farm.
Loot at Maximum
Loot at Maximum doesn’t mean that you need to loot and fill everything in your backpack. Build a base, first primary base, and then a secondary base a little bit away. Collect everything you find and store it in your base. If one of the bases gets attacked by zombies then you at least have a backup base.
Always carry weapons, disinfectant, fresh food, knives, map, and construction items in your backpack. You can't afford to lose your base in a zombie attack every time. Lifesaving things should always be in your backpack.
Collect Weapon & Backpack Before You Explore
The house in which you spawn will most probably have a fridge, some food, sheets, and a few zombies. So the first thing to do is grab as much as you can to survive and search for a hiking bag that you can find within 2-3 days.
Before you start far exploration, make sure you are well equipped with the items that will save your life when you encounter hordes of zombies. Items included are food, liquor, disinfectant, bandages, ax, pan, hammer, painkiller, stabilizers, and other weapons & intakes.
Conserve Your Weapon
If you have played Project Zomboid then you know that every weapon in the game has a lifespan. If you use the ax too much on weak zombies it will break and you will just lose an incredible weapon that could have saved you in group battle.
Keep 3 different types of weapons in the inventory like pan, ax, and knife. Switch as per the criticality of the situation. Use guns in very critical situations or you will regret wasting bullets. Stomp as much as you can to save the lifespan of weapons.
Be Smart When Approach Zombies
Project Zomboid is not about killing zombies, it is about survival, it can be offensive or defensive. So don’t be reckless and start a war against the dead. The main challenges in the game are the dead, scarcity of food & water, no electricity, loneliness, and lack of resources.
So long story short, if you can avoid zombies then do it. Deal with 2 or 3 zombies at a time. If there is a group then diverted with some noise, like your footstep instead of direct attack. If you find a few zombies near your base then kill them immediately because they will attract neighboring zombies.
Prevention is Better Than Cure
Everything is about patience, prevention, smart thinking, and planning. Once you are scratched, you have a 20-30% chance of becoming a zombie, and if beaten then 95-98% chance of zombifying.
Be prepared for the worst, have a medkit, food, and house before you start exploring different other regions. Be ready with a weapon to kill the dead for the final time.
Build a Home Not Base
Your survival depends upon many factors like sanity, hunger, health, temperature, so balance everything out. To relax and become stable you need a place that you can call home. The base is for battle, but home is for living happily.
Make your base so comfortable that it becomes your home. But never get too attached to your home when the dead arrives, you need to leave and find the next one.
Know All Shortcuts
There are many shortcuts you can find in-game and out of the game. I am talking about keyboard shortcuts. Like for example, you can map weapons on 1, 2, 3 keys on the keyboard for quick switching. As you play, you will memorize the map and avoid zombie groups while coming home from exploring.
The best tip for Project Zomboid that I can give you is patience, smart thinking, critical decisions, and planning.
There is nothing that will keep you alive forever, it’s just how long you played/lived, when & how you died. But this is what makes Project Zomboid so unique and engaging. With each death, a new adventure awaits.
Honestly, as you die, better you become for your next game and each gameplay is new, unique, and interesting. So these were the top 10 tips or tricks that I can give you guys to become better at Project Zomboid.
